The Athens County Emergency Management Agency along with the Athens County local emergency planning committee for hazardous materials, (LEPC) will be holding a hazardous materials spill preparedness exercise on Tuesday, June 11th. The preparedness exercise will be held at the Athens Waste Water Treatment Plant in Athens, Ohio, 557 East State Street. The exercise will be taking place between the hours of 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM on the 11th.
Residence surrounding the Athens Waste Water Treatment Plant on East State Street should not be alarmed to see large numbers of emergency vehicles in the area on Tuesday. Emergency response agencies from around Athens County will be exercising their capabilities to respond to a hazardous materials spill. Residence in the City of Athens may also receive simulated emergency messages on their telephones or local responders knocking on their door.
All Ohio Counties are required to annually exercise their emergency response plans. Once every four years that exercise must involve the full scale activation and response of local emergency agencies. The preparedness exercise will be evaluated by the State Emergency Response Committee and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.
