HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR ATHENS CO FROM 2 PM TO 8 PM FRI, 7/19, USE CAUTION DURING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Heat Advisory

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A HEAT ADVISORY FOR ATHENS COUNTY WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 8 PM THIS EVENING FRIDAY, JULY 19.

HEAT INDEX VALUES – IN THE UPPER 90S DUE TO TEMPERATURES AROUND 90 AND DEWPOINTS IN THE LOWER 70S.

TIMING – THIS AFTERNOON, 2PM TO 8PM.

IMPACTS – THE HEAT COULD MAKE IT DANGEROUS TO PERFORM OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES DURING THE AFTERNOON. THE HEAT COULD ALSO BE DANGEROUS FOR THOSE WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:
DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS, STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM, STAY OUT OF THE SUN AND CHECK IN ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK, THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY, CALL 9-1-1.
