@OhioU President McDavis, no threat to the safety of university or Athens community, East Green reopened for normal use

UPDATE 6:30 p.m. Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis sent the following message to the University community following the incident on East Green:

“This afternoon, the Ohio University Police Department (OUPD) dispatch received a telephone call about a self-reported shooting at Gamertsfelder Hall. Officers were immediately dispatched to Gamertsfelder Hall. A thorough search of Gamertsfelder Hall and the East Green found no evidence of a shooting or on-going threat. It was determined by our first-responders that there is no threat to the safety of our university or Athens community. The East Green has been reopened for normal use.

In response to the notification, we immediately implemented our established safety and communication protocols through OUPD and the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).

I am very pleased with the swift response of our emergency responders, including OUPD, the Athens Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Athens County Emergency Medical Services. I also commend our students, staff, faculty and community for their cooperation today.

The investigation of the incident is continuing, and we will continue to assess our emergency response to this incident.

Safety is our highest priority at Ohio University, and we appreciate the concerted efforts of all involved to ensure the protection of the campus and our community.”
