FLOOD WATCH FOR ATHENS CO FROM 1PM MON, 2/15 TO 10AM TUE, 2/16, WATCH FOR CHANGING WEATHER CONDITIONS!

Flood Watch

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH FORATHENS COUNTY FROM 1PM MONDAY, 2/15 THROUGH 10AM TUESDAY, 2/16

RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA LATER TODAY AND CONTINUE TONIGHT, BECOMING HEAVY AT TIMES OVERNIGHT. INDICATIONS ARE 1 TO 1.5 INCHES OF RAIN MAY FALL TONIGHT. WHILE THE SNOWPACK SHOULD ABSORB SOME OF THE RAINFALL INITIALLY, EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT MUCH OF THE SNOW WILL MELT OVERNIGHT. WITH THE GROUND NEARLY FROZEN, ADDITIONAL RAIN WILL LIKELY FALL AS RUNOFF INTO CREEKS AND STREAMS. THE END RESULT IS A RISK OF FLOODING, ESPECIALLY IN LOW LYING AREAS ALONG CREEKS AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS.  YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS. THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING DEVELOP.
