The Athens Fire Department was alerted at approximately 8:00 PM, Saturday June 23, 2018 for a male in the Hocking River near the Whites Mill water fall at 2 Whites Mill Drive in the City of Athens. Emergency responders discovered that a 29-year-old white male had jumped into the river upstream from Whites Mill and was swept down river. First responders could not find any sign of the missing individual and launched rescue boats to search for the missing person. The missing person is described as a 29-year-old white male, wearing black shorts and no shirt or shoes.
On Saturday responders searched until sunset and resumed search operations at 8:00 AM Sunday morning. Currently the unknown white male is still missing. The search operation for the missing person is continuing and being aided by multiple regional emergency agencies including;

- Ohio Department of Natural Resources
- Ohio Division of Water Craft
- Richland Area Fire Department
- Rome Township Fire Department
- Amesville Fire Department
- Jacksonville Fire Department
